Everyone appreciates how hard our police work to keep us safe. We all understand their jobs are tough under the best of circumstances. However, there are ongoing issues and controversies that just don’t seem to go away. From chronic under-staffing to reductions in our park detail and gang units, we need to address these issues now more than ever. Currently, the Council is outsourcing its oversight to external auditors and placing too much reliance on city staff, failing to ask the tough questions. This needs to change. There’s another aspect here we should consider: If we approve thousands of new residential units, how will we face the increased strain on our police when they are already understaffed? This is another example of why we need to hit the pause button on over-development.
